Part III: Actually, You Can Go Home Again

»»LISTEN to Part III

One of the ways that some of the people who used to live in the valley return to their lost homes is to, literally, return to their lost homes. Among the more surprising things I heard in reporting this story was the fact that a lot of the land that was cleared to build the reservoir is still above water.

The state had to clear it anyway to avoid any pollution coming from homes or buildings from leaching into the water supply. The unintended consequence of this is that some people who lived in such towns as Dana can actually go back and look down into their old cellar hole. And they do.

Every year there's a kind of hajj back to Dana Common. In July of 2003 I tagged along and saw a lot more than I expected to.
